What is Electrofusion Coupling?

Electrofusion coupling is a special fitting that connects plastic pipes through electric heating. It is an important category of electrofusion fittings. It heats the pipe and fittings through a built-in resistance wire to melt and bond the contact surface, forming a molecular-level sealed connection. It is widely used in HDPE (high-density polyethylene) pipe systems.

Core features

High sealing: no gaps in the welding interface, eliminating the risk of leakage

High strength: the strength of the connection part ≥ the strength of the pipe body (in accordance with ISO 21307 standard)

Adaptability: suitable for the connection of electrofusion pipe fittings with HDPE pipes of different brands

Electrofusion Coupling structure and working principle

1. Typical structure

Component Function
Resistance Wire Coil Generates heat when electrified to melt the contact surfaces between pipe and fitting
Temperature Sensor Monitors fusion temperature (typically 180-230°C)
Guide Groove Ensures precise pipe insertion depth (tolerance: ±1mm)

2. Workflow

Surface treatment: scrape off the oxide layer of the pipe (use a special scraper)

Assembly positioning: put the electrofusion coupling on the end of the pipe to be connected

Electric heating: the electric fusion welding machine activates the resistance wire according to the preset parameters (voltage/time)

Cooling and shaping: natural cooling forms a permanent connection (usually 20-30 minutes)

Key parameters: welding energy (usually 3-5 kJ/cm²), cooling pressure (≥0.15 MPa)

Four major application scenarios of Electrofusion Coupling

1. Pressure pipeline system

Water supply network (working pressure can reach 16 bar)

Gas transmission pipeline (compliant with ISO 4437 standard)

2. Trenchless repair

When the old pipeline is lined with HDPE pipe, use electrofusion pipe fittings to achieve segmented connection

3. Laying in complex terrain

Replace flange connection at nodes such as elbows and tees to reduce leakage points

4. Emergency repair

Quickly repair burst pipelines (save 50% time compared to traditional welding)

Comparison with traditional connection methods

Connection Method Sealing Performance Installation Speed Applicable Pipe Diameter Cost
Electrofusion Coupling ★★★★★ ★★★☆ 20-1200mm High
Butt Fusion ★★★★☆ ★★☆ >63mm Medium
Mechanical Connection ★★☆ ★★★★★ Full Range Low

Note: Electrofusion connection is most economical in the DN50-DN300 range

Construction precautions

1. Environmental control:

Pipes need to be preheated when the ambient temperature is less than 5℃

Open-air work is prohibited in rainy and snowy weather

2. Quality inspection:

Required inspection items: Flanging height of electrofusion zone (refer to EN 12814-2)

Non-destructive testing: Ultrasonic flaw detection (detection of bubbles/false welds)

3. Common failure modes:

Resistor wire break (caused by poor quality pipe fittings)

Oxide layer is not completely removed (insufficient scraping depth)

As the core product of electrofusion pipe fittings, Electrofusion Coupling has become the preferred connection solution for modern plastic pipe systems with its high reliability and convenient construction. In the fields of municipal, petrochemical, agricultural irrigation, etc., electrofusion pipe fittings that are correctly selected and constructed in a standardized manner can achieve more than 30 years of maintenance-free operation. It is recommended to give priority to products that have passed ISO certification and strictly follow the welding process regulations.
